SCHS Co-Op Program
Cooperative education commonly known as a "co-op" is a program offered at many schools including our School South County High School. It’s a program some may not have heard of. Co-op is a method of combining classroom-based education with practical work experience. A cooperative education experience, provides academic credit for structured job experience. Co-op is taking on new importance in helping young people to make the school-to-work transition. Co-op can be considered work-integrated learning and can involve a partnership between academics and employment. Co-op is offered for several reasons but is mostly intended to advance the education of the student while maintaining employment outside of school.
Co-op is a graded course that has certain requirements per grading period but it also allows Students to leave school early every other day to allow time for other things that may need to be done. The Co-op Program gives you an opportunity to earn academic credit(s) for working while still attending school. It gives an opportunity to gain real world experience and provides opportunity to build skills and demonstrate your abilities at a young age while still in high School. Besides gaining experience co-op helps you gain relationships with professionals and helps gain friendships with the people that are in the same “boat” as you. It Provides Chances to gain experience in chosen career fields and to have the opportunity to apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to actual on-the-job experiences. I think Co-op is great because it offers students a meaningful educational experience and puts them on the "fast-track" to a successful career.
