#CloseFCPS
It’s that time of year again, Stallions. Time to turn on the notifications for your favorite accounts such as @RyanLMcElveen and @fcpsnews because its #CloseFCPS season. Ever since Jan. 6, 2015 students of Fairfax County have tweeted and posted their “complaints” and “wishes” for school to be closed for either snow or cold weather. This trend started two years ago when students wished for school to be closed because of icy roads and snowy conditions, and school stayed open. As a result there were multiple tardies around the district and even two buses crashing resulting in minor injuries.
The hashtag #CloseFCPS trended #1 worldwide, and it even got national recognition from news channels such as FOX, NBC, and CNN. Students from all classes around the school have tweeted out their #CloseFCPS tweets every year. Continually the hashtag trends whenever the weather is bad, and it is now what our county is noted for (at least in the media).
“We have like 15 days set aside for snow days, I know there won't be 15 snow days, so what I’m saying is we should use the some of days when they are borderline snow days,” said senior Adonias Belay. This year it has continued, although we haven’t had any snow days—just a couple two hour delays. Many students have started tweeting their displeasures with school being open or the lack of snow and ice. If the snow gets here for sure we’ll be seeing more #CloseFCPS tweets trend.
