SoCo Science Fair 2017
The cafeteria is abuzz with the mingling of young scientists showing off experiments, theories, and phenomenal observations. Each and every student who contributed to the 2017 Science Fair feels a mixture of pride and nervousness as other students and teachers look on.
Every year, South County’s various Honors Science classes host a Science Fair in the cafeteria. This is more than a simple display of scientific prowess, it’s a competition. The prizes are scholarships. The Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Department (NVSWCD) selects the top projects relating to rivers, streams, water quality, erosion, and other natural resource issues, and awards first place a $100 scholarship, and to the next two, $50. Money is not the only benefit, however. Many Honors students genuinely enjoy working their mental muscle and collaborating to spread their love of science.
“It gives me a chance to conduct experiments with fellow students,” said Senior Vincent Chen. “It enriches my knowledge of science.”
This year, the Science Fair will be hosted in the cafeteria on Jan. 27 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
